TXT vs SRT vs VTT: Which Transcript Format Do You Need?
Choose TXT for readable text, SRT for timed subtitles or VTT for web captions. Compare the same spoken line in all three export formats.
Use TXT when you need to read or search the words. Use SRT or VTT when you need those words to appear at the right time in a video.
Video Script Extractor delivers all three in one ZIP. You can keep the text for notes and take a subtitle file into an editor or player that supports it.
Choose by your next step
Start with the format your destination accepts. An editor may request SRT, while a web player may accept WebVTT. The table below shows the main difference.
| Format | Includes timing? | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| TXT | No | Reading, searching and written drafts |
| SRT | Yes | Subtitle import in an editor that supports SRT |
| VTT | Yes | Web video captions and players that support WebVTT |
TXT: keep the words easy to use
A TXT file contains the transcript as plain text, without subtitle cue timings. Open it in a text editor or document to search a phrase, collect quotes or prepare notes.
Editing the TXT file does not change your separate subtitle files. Keep the original ZIP if you want an unchanged copy of every export.
Start with one simple idea.SRT: pair each line with a time range
An SRT file groups text into numbered subtitle cues. Each cue has a start time, an end time and the words to display. This example shows a line appearing during the first six seconds.
SRT uses a comma before milliseconds. Import the file with the same video version that was transcribed so its timing matches the audio.

WebVTT is a format for timed captions and other media tracks. A VTT file starts with WEBVTT and uses a period before milliseconds. A web video can use it through an HTML track element.
The example carries the same spoken line and timing as the SRT example. Renaming .srt to .vtt does not convert the file; use the VTT export when your player asks for WebVTT.

On a ready result, select Download all formats and unzip the archive. It contains transcript.txt, transcript.srt and transcript.vtt. You do not need to select a format before transcribing.
These files come from the saved result, so exporting again does not run the speech model or use more processing credits.
